Today we began our discussion about Punnett squares and advanced Punnett squares, dihybrid crosses. These types of Punnett squares involve the probability of inheriting two different traits. The rest of class was work time for the Punnett square packet and notes for tonight.

Today we began by going over the test from Friday. We then reviewed basic terminology regarding genetics, such as dominant/recessive, homozygous/heterozygous, and genotype/phenotype. We also discussed the importance of Gregor Mendel, the "father of genetics". Homework: 208-216, 219
Today we discussed what mutations are, how they are created, and the effects they have on functional proteins. The notes are found in the powerpoint folder under Unit 2.
Afterward, we used action figures or stuffed animals as inspiration for a mutations lab. The lab can be found on Google classroom or in the "Labs" folder on this website. Homework tonight is to take the Quizziz quiz found on Google classroom. This is a competition (maybe for prizes…) and will help guide review for tomorrow. WARM-UP:
Use the DNA strand below to answer the following questions: 3' - TAC CCA GAT CGA TAT ATT - 5' 1. Create the strand of mRNA that would result after transcription (DNA to RNA; use the same beginning strand). 2. Use the genetic code chart (given Thursday) to determine what amino acids would be in this protein. Today we reviewed the material we covered before our long weekend: protein synthesis. Please see the powerpoint in the notes folder if absent. We then did a lab activity called "The Mysterious Monster". Students were tasked with taking 7 DNA strands, converting them to mRNA, then to amino acids, and ultimately determining the traits that the DNA coded for. Students will then draw a monster that has the seven traits in question. The lab can be found on google classroom if absent (or if you lose yours) or in the Labs/Activities folder. For absent students, you may use this set of DNA strands: Today we took a quiz over the Cell Cycle; please see Mrs. Smith if you were absent. Afterward, we watched the video "Dear 16-year-old Me" (in Monday's notes) and discussed skin cancer. We finished the day with notes over protein synthesis (transcription and translation). The powerpoint that went along with today's lesson is in the notes folder. If absent, see Mrs. Smith for a foldable that will help understand the process and a copy of the genetic code for you to keep. Please begin class by watching The Amoeba Sisters' video about the Cell Cycle and Cancer (found on google classroom and below) and answering the questions on google classroom. When finished, you will create an infographic about a cancer type of your choice in attempts to educate the public for both prevention and research potential. Information is found below and on Google Classroom. This assignment is due by Sunday, Feb. 19th on your Weebly website!
Today we began class by reviewing the cell cycle and mitosis as a class(second period will tomorrow, as Ms. Smith had a meeting). For any students still having difficulties (or second period due to absence), please watch the video below. We then discussed how this process is controlled; all cells do not go through the cell cycle, nor do they do so at the same speeds. There are factors which control its timing, and if those factors go awry, bad things can happen, like cancer. The notes for this can be found towards the end of the Cell Cycle - Mitosis powerpoint in the "Notes/Lecture" folder under Unit 2.
Homework: finish Cell Cycle Flipbooks
Today we began class by taking a quiz over DNA Structure and Replication. We then discussed how a molecule as large as DNA can fit into such a tiny location, the nucleus. The video below helps explain. We then worked on the Cell Cycle Flipbook. Students are to create a flip book (seen below on the left) over the stages of the cell cycle. Directions for the booklet can be seen below, or are found in the documents folder in Unit 2, or are on Google classroom. This is due Tuesday.
Homework: pages 153-155 (Cell Cycle Regulation) Today we discussed why we would need to make more cells and how the cell cycle begins, with copying the DNA molecule, or DNA replication. We then extracted DNA from a strawberry! HW: none |
