Fun Frantic Friday

We have a lot of things going on today.  They are as follows:

1.  You have a test coming up!  The review for the test, as well as study tips, are under the "Study!!" tab to the left.  Start preparing asap!  Don't wait until Tuesday night!

2.  We started our week long egg lab.  Today we began Day 1 of the lab, which involved putting the egg in 200 ml of vinegar in order to dissolve the shell surrounding the membrane.  We will continue this lab on Monday.

3.  We continued our examination of osmosis and diffusion with the Paramecium Gizmo.  Students were given a paper copy (because of all of the iPad issues), but if you would like an electronic copy or if you were absent, it can be found in the labs folder under Unit 1.

4.  The last 20 minutes of class, Ms. Leslie Gibson from FMHS main spoke with us about registering for Chemistry classes for next year.  If absent, or you have any more questions, Mrs. Smith will be happy to help you make a well-informed decision.

Aaaaaannnnddd...we are on pep rally schedule today.  Woohoo!

HOMEWORK this weekend is to finish the gizmo, if not done in class, and watch the following videos.

Today we took a quiz on cell organelles and biomolecules.  Please see Mrs. Smith if absent.

We then discussed the importance of the cell membrane and its role in maintaining homeostasis.  Diffusion, osmosis, passive, and active transport were discussed.  The "Cell Membrane" powerpoint includes the information discussed today.

Homework tonight is to ensure that the Cell Stations from the past two days are finished and uploaded onto google classroom.

Today and tomorrow, students will be learning various things about cells by reading articles, exploring activities, and watching videos.

The two articles that are needed for this activity are the "Cell Stations" page and the "Cell Gizmo", both which can be found in the lab folder under Unit 1 or obtained from your teacher.  The cell coloring sheet is only available in paper format and must be obtained from your teacher.  Websites used during the activity can be copied and pasted into your browser, or can be found below:

Part One:
The Wacky History of Cell Theory

Bill Nye: Spontaneous Generation

Size Scale of Common Objects

Part Two:
Prokaryotes: Arizona.edu

Part Three:
Gizmos website

Part Four:
Endosymbiont Theory

Part Five:
Stem Cells

Today we discussed the four biomolecules that make up all life: carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins.  The notes we went through can be found in the "Notes" folder under Unit 1.

Students then had time to work on their Levels of Organization book from Friday.  This book is due tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Homework for tonight is pages 118-126 (cells and organelles).

To start class, we took a quiz over lab equipment and safety.  See Mrs. Smith if you were absent.

We continued on our lab from yesterday, and when finished, discussed how we determine if an object is "living".  The powerpoint from today is entitled "Characteristics of Life" and is in the notes folder under Unit 1.

The assignment given today is to create a book for the levels of organization of life.  The information can be found in your book or in the powerpoint above.  The directions for what must be included in your book can be found below, or in the "documents" folder under Unit 1.

Today we downloaded our textbooks and learned how to access the online version as well.  If you were absent today (or are having difficulties) please see Mrs. Smith for help.  You will need your textbook starting...now.

We completed a simple lab today regarding how to correctly and accurately measure items using the metric system and how to record this data using digital tools that are available on your iPad (Pages).  The lab we completed can be found in the labs folder under Unit 1, or on Google Classroom.  When completed, the lab should be turned in, in PDF format, onto Google Classroom.

Homework for tonight is reading and notes over pages 83-91 (Biomolecules: Carbohydrates and Proteins).
