Today we completed an inquiry-based lab to determine what size cells are the most effective at moving needed materials in and out of the cell. Students were given agar cubes of varying sizes (agar had a pH indicator in it) that were placed in vinegar. Students then determined the surface area and volume of the cells to figure out what ratio would be the most effective for a cell to have.
When finished with the lab, we then discussed the reasons that cells will divide and the beginning stage of cell division, DNA replication. Below are two great videos that explain the process of DNA replication (the one from Crash Course also explains DNA structure if you are struggling with that).
