We also completed (Day 6) the egg lab. Information regarding a formal lab report will be addressed Friday.
Today we did a lab that incorporated an investigation of photosynthesis and pigments in a spinach leaf. The lab can be found in the labs folder under unit 1. We also completed (Day 6) the egg lab. Information regarding a formal lab report will be addressed Friday. HW: questions for the lab

Today we worked on Day 5 of our egg lab, testing what would happen to the size of a cell in distilled water.
Afterward, we discussed the process of cellular respiration. When finished, we read the case of the Cyanide Murders found here and answered questions that pertained to how scientists solved the case. The worksheet that goes along with the reading can be found here. HW: Study for Friday's test. We started class by performing Day 4 of our egg lab; investigating what happened to the egg over the weekend and setting up an experiment to measure what happens to the egg size when in a solution of syrup.
We then discussed the process of photosynthesis and labeled a plant cell and chloroplast structure. HW: none Today we discussed how cell membrane structure contributes to its function: regulating the movement of materials in and out of the cell. We discussed the process of diffusion and osmosis and what would happen to animal/plant cells in hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic solutions. Students then completed an activity where they hypothesized what would happen to a cell in various solutions.
HW: pg. 158 - 163 We finished discussing the cell organelles (in same powerpoint as yesterday's notes) today. Students then worked on creating Instagram profiles for 3 organelles of their choice. Assignment is on Google Classroom. This assignment was due at the end of class.
Homework: pg. 129-134 (cell membrane) QUIZ TOMORROW: Cells and Biomolecules At the beginning of class today, we reviewed the biomolecules from Friday. Afterwards, we discussed the "discovery" of the cell, The Cell Theory, and the two main categories of cells: prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Students that want to review, or were absent, should look at the powerpoint entitled "Cells" in the notes folder in Unit 1.
After notes, we completed the Cell Structure Gizmo on explore learning.com. Students should use the log-in JaggyJ424; pen424 to access the account needed. A pdf of the document we used in class is found in the Documents folder in Unit 1. HW: pg 118-126 and finish Gizmo if not done in class. Today we discussed the four large molecules of life, or biomolecules. Students are responsible for knowing the function of these molecules, monomers, polymers, and examples.
Since we are on shorter class periods today due to the afternoon pep rally, students had the remainder of class to work on the booklet from yesterday (due Tuesday) or notes for this weekend. HW: pg. 112-117 |
