If you were absent today, please make sure to turn in your lab from yesterday over plant IDs. Today we discussed angiosperm reproduction and how plants respond to their environment. This can be found in the Plant Reproduction lesson in the powerpoints folder. We did the Flowers, Fruits, Seeds lab today, which can be found in the labs folder. If absent today, please do the "Plant Pollination: From Flower to Fruit" Gizmo found at www.explorelearning.com or using the gizmos app. The log-in is JaggyJ488; lot488. The documents can be found on google classroom where the Band Students assignment is. Homework tonight is pages 480-481 (fungi). This assignment will count as a minor grade, and will replace any minor grade during the second nine weeks (quiz, homework, lab grade). Your task is to: 1. Watch the following video below (about 20 min.) 2. Calculate your ecological footprint here. Note: You will need Adobe Flash for this and possibly your parents' help due to the nature of some of the questions. 3. Choose one of the ecology infographics/websites below and read through it. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch The Global Water Crisis Effect of Overpopulation on Public Health The Life Cycle of a Plastic Bag Electronic Waste 3. Go to this document, and answer the questions found within. If you choose to complete this assignment, it is due Monday, November 14th at 4pm.
Today we discussed the four types of plants: bryophytes (non-vascular plants), seedless vascular plants, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. Afterwards, we did the Plant ID Lab inside (due to the rain); the lab can be found both on google classroom and at the link below.
HW tonight: pgs. 504-506, 492-493 (angiosperm reproduction) To begin our transition from ecology to diversity of life, we watched a video about why biodiversity (the measure of how many species are in an area) is so important. We then discussed the main types of plant tissues: leaves, roots, stems, and vascular tissue. If absent you can find this in the plants powerpoint at the beginning.
HW: pg 485, 487, 489-491 HOT ZONE PT. 1 due tomorrow!! Here is the link to what you can do to stay on top of material while you are gone being awesome at State.
You can do it!!!! Today we examined what factors can affect population growth in an ecosystem. We then played Ecology Jenga to analyze how small human-related events can collapse an ecosystem.
HW: Study for tomorrow's test! Today we discussed the impact of non-native species, or invasive species, on ecosystems. We watched Nature's "Invasion of the Giant Pythons". The video can be seen below: Some thinking questions while watching:
1. How did the pythons get to Florida? Are there any feasible ways to prevent something like this from happening again? 2. How are scientists and the community attempting to curb the population of pythons and reduce the effect they have on the Everglades? 3. What ways do you think their efforts of snake removal could be improved? Remember to think about the native species that are already here! Today, as a group, we completed the ecology learning stations found here. If you were absent, please see me as to how to make up this work.
