Today we finished the little remaining info. about meiosis and then made a double bubble map comparing and contrasting the 2 types of cell division: mitosis and meiosis. We then reviewed basic terminology regarding genetics, such as dominant/recessive, homozygous/heterozygous, and genotype/phenotype. We also discussed the importance of Gregor Mendel, the "father of genetics".

Today, we finished our genetic technology web quest and discussed both the pros and cons of using such technology. We then began discussion on how organisms create gametes, or sex cells, for sexual reproduction. Information can be found in the "Meiosis" powerpoint. HW: pg. 188-191, 193-195 (basic genetics)
Today we discussed the use of selective breeding in which humans will control the traits of other organisms, such as dogs. We then learned about newer ways to control traits that we have developed with DNA technology. Students will complete a web quest found on google classroom (or in the documents folder). The first two links must be accessed on a device other then an iPad (since they are flash based).
HW: 181-186 Today we talked about mutations in class. Please see the powerpoint in the notes folder if absent. We then did a lab activity called "The Mysterious Monster". Students were tasked with taking 7 DNA strands, converting them to mRNA, then to amino acids, and ultimately determining the traits that the DNA coded for. Students will then draw a monster that has the seven traits in question. The lab can be found on google classroom if absent (or if you lose yours) or in the Labs/Activities folder. For absent students, you may use this set of DNA strands: HW: Read pgs. 249-250 (sickle cell anemia) and finish cancer infographic (due tomorrow at 5pm)
Today we discussed protein synthesis. Please access the powerpoint for help, more information, or if you were absent. You can also watch the video below. Realize, some parts of this video go into more detail than we do in preAP, but it's a great resource. The second video is from the Ameoba sisters. It's a little cheesy, and a little annoying, but it is educational. ;) We then practiced the process of protein synthesis by examining short segments of DNA for some interesting, real-life proteins. The handout that was used in class can be found in the documents folder and the protein profiles can be found in the classroom, below, and HERE as well. The performance task for the second nine weeks was assigned today. For LISD cancer awareness week, students have been tasked with creating an infographic about a chosen cancer type. Information can be found on google classroom.
HW: 229-237 (protein synthesis) We discussed the importance of cell cycle regulation and what happens when it goes awry today. Information can be found in the Cell Cycle powerpoint. We then watched "Dear 16 year old Me" and the documentary "Vice: Killing Cancer". No homework tonight. Today students did a self-learning activity about the cell cycle, which is a process in which cells divide and make copies of themselves. Students are to create a foldable which depicts the major steps of the cell cycle. Directions were given on paper in class and can also be found in the documents folder on this website. HW: none Today we discussed why we would need to make more cells and how the cell cycle begins, with copying the DNA molecule, or DNA replication. Students then had time to work on their lab write-up. HW: none We discussed the discovery and structure of DNA today. Please see the appropriate powerpoint for notes taken today in class. Afterward, we extracted DNA from strawberries! There are no questions or assignments that go along with this lab; it was for pure fun. :) HW: 142-146 Rosalind Franklin video |
